Host Daryl Somers confirmed the show would return in some form thanks to the runaway success of the two reunion specials last month.

Somers met Nine boss David Gyngell and programming director Michael Healey on Thursday to discuss the show's future.

"I would like to think we'll be doing something next year," Somers said. "We have not looked at the details of it at this stage but what we did this year worked, based on the audience reaction.

"And on a selfish note, we enjoyed doing the show so much we plan to be back and to get the whole gang back if we can."

The two unscripted, live reunion specials, which ran for more than three hours on Wednesday nights, attracted 2.16 million viewers.

THE return of Hey, Hey It's Saturday next year is practically set in stone after Daryl Somers and Channel 9 bigwigs were caught deep in discussions this week.

Tongues were set wagging at Nine's Melbourne headquarters when head honcho David Gyngell appeared at the Richmond studios on Thursday, before heading out to lunch with Somers and network director of programming Michael Healey.

Industry insiders said it was not a matter of if Hey Hey would run next year, but when, in what format and for how many episodes.

Did Karl Stefanovic accidentally leak news on Hey Hey it’s Saturday this week?

Stefanovic and co-host Lisa Wilkinson were interviewing the man of ‘ten-thousand sound effects, Michael Winslow, on Wednesday morning.

At the end of the interview here’s what unfolded:

KARL: “Alright Michael, it’s always good to see you here… and we’ll see you next year on Hey Hey it’s Wednesday, hopefully.”

MICHAEL: “Absolutely, what a great show. And I’m glad to see everybody’s back. Glad to see that show back on the air. Good onya.

KARL: “I don’t think anybody knows about that yet, but anyway….”

MICHAEL: “Uh oh.”

Indeed.

Nine is yet to make any official announcement about the future of the show for 2010.

Hey Hey it’s Saturday is expected to return in 2010 as a series of specials across the year, The Australian reports.

The Nine variety show is likely to return with 8 – 10 seasonal specials next year to capitalise on its popularity following the two reunion specials.

Last week Daryl Somers repeatedly said it was the last show. Seemingly unhappy that the future was not secured he told viewers, “Whether we go beyond tonight in some form or other…. what the future holds we don’t know at the moment.”

Nine’s top brass David Gyngell and Programming Chief Michael Healy were at MIPCOM in Cannes at the time. Somers is said to have rung and asked for the first reunion special to be dropped from its repeat just hours before it was due. Nine bore the brunt of the fury unleashed from Somers’ own fans through angry phone calls and emails.

Last week’s “Jackson Jive” skit is unlikely to weigh into Nine’s decision making on the show’s future.

It’s a mosquito bite compared with the popularity of the show,” one executive told The Australian.

Sources said there could be a live stadium event of the show, and it could travel the country -just as it did during its 28 year reign.

But a return is not expected to include Molly Meldrum, released by Seven and Foxtel for the two specials. Red Symons is on a series contract for Australia’s Got Talent, previously produced by Hey Hey’s longtime producer, Pam Barnes. Who knows what it means for Ossie Ostrich or Jacki MacDonald…

With the production expenses, and the huge audience it pulled, the show is unlikely to ever reside on Saturdays anymore either.

The Hey Hey Facebook page is currently topping 357,000 members.

A deal on the show’s future is tipped by the end of the week.

MUSIC guru Molly Meldrum will be part of the Hey Hey It's Saturday reunion shows.

In a move full of good will, Channel 7 reversed its decision to ban Meldrum from appearing on the Hey Hey specials on rival network Channel 9 after host Daryl Somers pleaded his case to Seven boss David Leckie, the Herald Sun reports.

"They are allowing me to do the Hey Hey shows and I am sure it is going to be great fun," Meldrum said.

"From the Countdown days at the ABC and then to move to Hey Hey in 1987, and be part of that, another iconic show, for the next 12 years or so, I have been extremely lucky in life," he said.

It has been rumoured on Melbourne’s talkback radio station 3AW this morning that an agreement has been reached to release Molly Meldrum to appear on the upcoming Hey Hey It’s Saturday Specials (or is that Tuesday) which will be airing on Channel Nine soon.

Molly is currently contracted to Seven so it was thought that he would be missing out on the reunion gig – seems Seven has had a change of heart – or is that an offer (read $$$$) too good to refuse?

After 10 years Daryl Somers will be back behind the desk at Nine, but on a new night.
Hey Hey makes a comeback!

The two Hey Hey it's Saturday reunion specials will air on Tuesday nights, beginning later this month.

The nostalgic reunions follow a long campaign, both by fans and host Daryl Somers, to see the show back on television.

The two specials will be live to air from its traditional home at Channel Nine studios in Melbourne, where it aired live for 27 remarkable years. It's back at 7:30pm September 29th and October 6th.

The show's return comes just shy of the 10-year anniversary of its final episode, when it succumbed to cost cutting.

Returning for the show are many of the regulars including John Blackman, Red Symons, Wilbur Wilde, Russel Gilbert and Livinia Nixon.

At this stage Molly Meldrum is unable to participate due to his on-going contract with the Seven Network. That hasn't precluded him from appearing in an upcoming Spicks & Specks episode, despite the stellar ratings that attracts.

Also unconfirmed at this stage is Ernie Carroll, the man behind Ossie Ostrich. Carroll, who retired from the show in 1994, is now 80 years old. While Nine isn't ruling his appearance out, it does seem highly unlikely. Jackie MacDonald is also reportedly a no.

Nine's strategy in moving the show to a Tuesday night is to combat the competition on rival networks. It will be pitted against some big hitters, including Packed to the Rafters, NCIS and the upcoming The Spearman Experiment. While nostalgic fans will remember watching the show while getting ready for a big night out, Nine knows there are a lot more eyeballs watching the box on a Tuesday night when it can maximise its advertising revenue.

If the show works, especially in its second special, it could get the green light to be a regular.

So get ready for the return of such favourites as Celebrity Head, Wot Cheezes Me Orf, Media Watch, Phunny Fotos and, of course, Red Faces. In fact, Nine is looking for contestants and have an open call for tickets.

Molly Meldrum banned from Hey Hey It's Saturday return

HOST Daryl Somers will be there, as will Red Symons, but music guru Molly Meldrum has been banned from returning to the reunion specials of Nine's former long-running hit show Hey Hey It's Saturday by Channel 7.
"At the moment I am not allowed to do it and I honour that," the veteran presenter said.

"I work for Channel 7 and I believe (Seven boss) David Leckie has said no."

John Blackman, Wilbur Wilde, Russell Gilbert and Livinia Nixon are in, while Molly and Jackie MacDonald are out, and there is a question mark over Ernie Carroll.

That is the status on the Hey Hey It's Saturday specials, hosted by Daryl Somers, which will screen on Channel 9 in late September and early October.

Nine has confirmed that Symons, Blackman, Wilde, Gilbert and Nixon are definite starters for the reunion specials.

Plucka Duck will appear and Somers hopes that Carroll, famous for creating Ossie Ostrich, will be involved.

Nine hasn't give up hope that it can convince rival Seven boss David Leckie to allow Meldrum to appear.

The Hey Hey specials are set to feature many of fans' favourite segments - Red Faces, Celebrity Head, Wot Cheezes Me Orf, Media Watch Press and Phunny Fotos. Each special will be live and run for two hours.

"No one is a definite 'no' at this stage," a Nine spokesman said.

Less than 400 tickets will be available for the two specials.

Somers has decided to bypass normal ticket agencies and the internet to determine who gets the coveted seats.

Instead, fans will have to try their luck by sending a letter to Channel 9.

"Daryl is really keen that the people in the audience are die-hard fans," the Nine spokesman said. "It's first in, best dressed, so if you're a die-hard fan you'll be writing in straight away."

One person who will definitely be in the audience is 23-year-old Corrine Lawrence who started the Bring Back Hey Hey Facebook fansite which has about 200,000 fans.

Somers contacted Lawrence to invite her.

Nine has launched an official Hey Hey website which contains ticket details and asks fans for entries for the Wot Cheezes Me Orf, Media Watch Press and Phunny Fotos segments
